What year Fusion has the most reliable motor and trans combo?

I’m reading the 2.5 motor is the way to go but that there are several different transmissions? What year has the reliable 2.5 and best trans combo?

The 17-19 Sport is the most reliable with any 2.5L model being next. The 2.5L has better gas mileage.

Any other years prior to this that are reliable or is this the gold standard?

@Corey
The Sport was only available from 2017 - 2019, with less than 2000 Sports manufactured in 2019.

Also, all gas models had the 6F35 transmission. The early 1.6L was available with a manual. The hybrid has an HF35 CVT, which like all CVTs is crap, and the Sport has an upgraded 6F, the 6F55.

@Sterling
the HF35 is not your typical belt driven CVT… please do your research before commenting stuff like that. The HF35 will outlast both the 6F35 & 6F55 any day.

I guess being Ford certified and having HF35s apart, with them being universally panned as one of the worst transmissions out there, I must be talking out my ass.

But hey, you do you keyboard cowboy. Cheers!

@Sterling
they must’ve been the earlier models of the HF35 (2013 to late 2015) with the bearing issue which was a supplier issue. I’m not sure where you heard that they were the worst out there unless they were referring to the 6F35:rofl::rofl: & it’s crazy how you’re the only ‘ford tech’ that claims the HF35 is bad when there’s other ford techs on here praising it as one of the best trannys out there, but you do you cowboy:man_shrugging:

2017 and newer hybrids. Toyota based transmission design without the main bearing problem of earlier years. Unkillable 2.0 Atkinson cycle Mazda designed engine. No plug in recall.

So the 2.0 in these years are more reliable than the 2.5?

@Corey
2.0 hybrid.

@Corey
yes because not only is the engine bulletproof, the HF35 that’s attached to it is also bulletproof. The 2.5 is a good engine but the 6F35 is what’s gonna go bad on it at some point.

Transmission is not Toyota based. In fact, Toyota copied the new more compact gear layout of the HF35 transmission.

AISIN designed the transmission and Ford and Toyota made a deal not to sue each other because they are so similar.

@Wendell
Isn’t the Aisin company part of the Toyota group, and wasn’t the ecvt design first made for the Prius? I wasn’t aware of changes for the HF35, but when I say it’s a Toyota based design, I was talking about the ecvt concept as a whole.

@Val
Aisin is an offshoot of Kawasaki. But you are right it IS a Toyota group company. I didn’t know that.

The two-axis design was first used in the C-Max and the Fusion. Later it was used in the Prius. But it seems you are right that the eCVT has Toyota fingerprints on it from the beginning.

I drove the 2001 Prius and it blew my mind when the MPG gauge went over 100.

my 2020 AWD with the 2.0 ecoboost has a 6Fxx. Not sure the exact model. I’ve read that the issues with that trans were prior to 2009. So far at 42k zero issues.

Every 2.5 (and every 10+ Fusion besides the Sport and hybrid variants) is paired with the ornery 6F35. But generally they’ll last to 150-200k just fine with fluid changes every 30-40k, even if some shifts make you wonder if everything’s ok in there.

The 17+ hybrids are very reliable, and 06-09 V6s have the most reliable transmission (an Aisin 6 speed). 10-12 Sports with the 3.5 use this too, but should be avoided for the internal water pump issues.

Avoid 17-19 2.0T and both 1.x Ecoboosts from any year.

@Oakes
What exactly goes wrong with the 6F35?

15 and newer hybrids.

My 2014 Energi has been rock solid.
