Recently purchased this 2016 Ford Fusion SE 1.5 L Ecoboost. I'm looking for modification ideas

I bought a K&N cold air intake kit, but when I opened the box, the intake tube only had 2 threaded openings. I need 3 openings—2 threaded and a grommet. K&N shipped another tube, but it was the same.

Cold air intakes are fairly useless on their own and only add value to other modifications. They mostly just make noise under the hood.

The real issue is that your 1.5L may suffer from coolant intrusion. Rather than risking your engine, just maintain it and drive normally.

@Hollis
Thank you for your help.

Respectfully… you got an eco car with a small turbo. This isn’t the time for tuning, as any gains will be negligible for the money spent.

So, what everyone is saying is that I bought a car I can’t fix up? Everything so far has been negative and seems to imply I made a mistake buying this car/engine. Thank you, everyone, for your input. Have a great evening.

@Sky
Well, everyone is right. It’s a small engine. Sell the car and get a 2.0 or 2.7 turbo if you want to go fast.

Put the K&N on the marketplace and sell that too. If you want to keep the car, consider exterior and interior mods, but don’t expect anything from that engine.

I own a 2.5L and it’s slow and noisy, but it will run forever like a tractor. If you love the car, enjoy it. Just be realistic about what you have.

Mine looks identical to yours except it’s silver. The OEM rims look cool off the lot.

@West
Exactly, it’s a great car for what it is. But it sounds like OP should have researched a bit before buying a vehicle they intended to tune, not after.

Enjoy your car, it’s not bad, but sorry you’re not getting the responses you hoped for. At least everyone has been respectful.

@West
Thank you for the information about this engine. I will keep it the way it is. Thank you, everyone. You’ve all helped me. I’m just unfamiliar with these new engines; I’ve worked on older cars with carburetors, lol. Have a great evening.

@West
My 2012 2.5L doesn’t like to go below 60-70mph. It sits comfortably at those speeds. That engine is bomb-proof; I’ve worked on plenty of them.

Honestly, a cold air intake isn’t worth it. I had one on my 2016 Ecoboost SE and it just wasn’t worth it.

What were your reasons?

You typically only gain more noise. I’d say 90% of these intakes I see in the shop end up neglected. Being an aftermarket filter means we don’t service them, and they can end up worse due to a clogged filter.

The cold air intake is a waste. You would be better off making it more luxurious than tuning it. Sound dampening is a great addition.

You don’t want to increase HP on a Fusion unless you’ve got backup money for a new engine.

@Blaine
That sounds good. I definitely don’t have the money for an engine.

So, what suggestions do you have for increasing horsepower? Also, any ideas for overall wheels, spoilers, etc?

It’s a 1.5. Seriously, if you want more power, sell it and get one with a 2.0 or 3.5TT. You can throw every performance part at a 1.5 and might get at most 30hp, which doesn’t even match the power of the 2.0.

@Niko
There’s no 3.5L TT in this generation Fusion or any Fusion, for that matter.

You’re right. I mixed it up with something else, but it doesn’t change that I wouldn’t bother with the 1.5.

I don’t mean to sound harsh. It’s just the reality. Modding the 1.5 or 1.6 isn’t worth it. This question gets asked weekly, and the answer is always the same.

You’ll likely end up questioning your transmission, too. Check the subreddit for similar posts.
