My wife noticed today that this door handle key cap part on our 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid Platinum doesn’t match. It seems like something we would notice, so the prevailing theory is that someone stole it while she was parked at work today, but then replaced it with this shittier non-matching piece?
Anyone know what this piece is actually called?
Why would someone steal it, and then replace it? Is this a purely cosmetic piece?

They probably stole yours because theirs didn’t match. Mine just fell off one day and I ended up hot gluing it back on there.
For the four years that I’ve owned a Fusion, I was unaware that it was a cover.
I’m such a fool, hehe.
The color is a little off, just like yours, which made me think for a few second that I could probably exchange it the next time I saw a white Fusion parked in a mall or some public area. Mine fell off a few months ago. I got one on Amazon. And that’s when I almost became an asshole. I think someone who couldn’t help but change it out for an asshole did that.
My daddy would steal it and then replace it more than likely the last shop or place you dropped your car off for something they broke it and just put another one on.
I’ve had my drivers door key cap stolen twice. I’m done 
. I even painted it to match and it was perfect. Unfortunately my color fusion is popular af in my area
I’ve bought perfectly matching bottles of touch-up paint for under $25 on eBay. Would imagine you could use this to paint the replacement.
Ooooohhhh no, platinum trim? Tri-color white? I hope the replacement came in the correct color. Body shops will charge more for painting if it’s required.
He most likely just swiped yours so he wouldn’t have to pay to have it painted because when you buy them online, they come primed. A quote of $200 was given to me to paint it.
