I recently purchased a 2016 Fusion with 120,000 miles. It runs great, but I’ve noticed it shifts slightly hard from first to second. I’m aware that hard shifting can be common, especially at this mileage. Given I don’t know if the transmission fluid has been changed, should I do a transmission fluid flush?
Never flush. Just change the fluid. What type of engine do you have? Hopefully, it’s the 2.5L.

It has the 1.5T engine.

Ah, okay. Just a heads up, a lot of people have reported coolant intrusion issues around 70k-115k miles with that engine. Personally, I prefer not to own a low-power car with a turbo, as the turbo adds another component that could fail.
@Ben
I had to replace my 2017 engine at 90,000 kilometers

Just remember to use full synthetic oil, change your transmission fluid every 30k miles, and DO NOT FLUSH! Also, change your coolant every 45k-60k.
@Hale
Also, make sure to use Ford transmission fluid ‘Mercon-Lv.’
I just hit 200,000 miles on my 1.5. Here are some things I’ve learned:
- The brake master cylinder (located behind the battery) may fail around 110,000 miles.
- I had to repair the transmission around 120,000.
- The valve cover needed replacement at 160,000.
It’s been a smooth ride overall. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. The turbo is a bit gimmicky, but helps with traction in the snow when in low gear. Enjoy your new ride!
@Keir
What was wrong with the transmission? How much did the repair cost? Also, how much for the valve cover repair?

The ‘teeth’ in the transmission were worn down and needed replacing. It cost around $1,200, but transmission repairs can range from $800 to $2,500 depending on the damage. The valve cover repair cost me only $200, as I bought the part myself and it only took the mechanic 2 hours.
@Keir
Did you take it to the dealer for the transmission repair?

No, I took it to a transmission specialist.
I ran my 2.0T up to 220,000 miles without major issues.
Nice color! I have a 2014 with the same color and engine. I just had the rear seal on the transmission replaced as it was leaking, and I was experiencing hard shifting. Now it shifts smoothly.

Did you change the fluid too? Was it partial or a complete change?
@Bailey
I didn’t, but the mechanic handled it while replacing the seal. He had to drop the transmission to replace it.
Remember: drain and fill only, never flush. If in doubt, drain and fill, drive for 100 miles, then drain and fill again.
I have a 2016 Fusion 2.5L with 93k miles. I did the transmission drain and fill at 50k miles twice and did another at 92k due to slipping from 2-3 at low temperatures, which resolved the issue. Ford recommends changing it around 150k miles, but doing it sooner is generally safer.
@Bex
Mine has the 1.5 engine.

It should still have the same 6F35 transmission. Ford just changes the fill/check point for some reason.
