Regular hybrids actually get slightly better mileage than our Energis (when not running on battery). It’s the cost of carrying around that extra weight and battery. The regular hybrid also has enough trunk space for hauling around tools or equipment.

That’s true, but the trade-off for that extra weight without the plug-in is that it can last longer in EV mode. That extra time is what leads to slightly better mileage even with that weight.
But that depends on driving conditions and habits.
