I gave my colleague a jumpstart, and he didn’t close my hood properly. The “hood open” notification line was cut off by the previous owner, so I didn’t know it wasn’t latched. It was rainy and windy, and while driving at 40 mph, the hood flew open. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the damage includes the pillar, hood hinges, and maybe more.
Is there any chance this can be repaired back to its original condition? It’s a ’17 Fusion Sport.
Ouch… I’m not entirely sure what’s replaceable on the A pillar there. That’s a structural part of the car; I’d take it to a mechanic or two and get opinions. Sorry to see a Sport hurt .

Yeah, I don’t think any part of the pillar is replaceable, but some welding could bring back most of the integrity, no? And thank you for the kind words; I’m not giving up on her yet.
I work in collision repair … This is not good. The pillars are High Strength Steel, much stronger than the normal body panels on the exterior. This would have to be cut out and a new one welded in. The manufacturer will have specific points where this has to happen at, but it’s likely where the pillar meets the roof and where the pillar meets the floor. The dash would need to be removed along with most of the interior in front of the seats and the fenders, doors, hood, bumper. File an insurance claim; it would fall under comprehensive coverage, which is unlikely to impact your rates.
Oofta. Definitely get a professional opinion. But when I hit a deer with my Fusion earlier this year, on top of the normal damage you expect, it dislocated the hood and jammed it into the A pillars. I think that was the final death knell for it to be totaled. That being said, it was an SE and had a lot more damage than just the A pillars, so I won’t say it’s guaranteed totaled yet. But it definitely won’t be cheap. Also, the previous owner cut the hood sensor? I’m sorry, but what a clueless asshole. That’s actually a pretty important safety feature, so auto start can’t work with the hood open and to prevent this exact issue. It’s not there for shits and gigs. And I guess you’re paying the price for it. That really sucks ass, man.
