23S33 Recall Buy Back

Does anyone have experience selling their Fusion plug-in back to Ford? So far this has been a pain. I purchased my Fusion plug-in hybrid in February of 2022.

The battery is recalled, so I cannot plug it in. They are now offering a buy back program that is market value plus 15% (they determine what the market value is).

I live in a state where I am taxed for having an electric vehicle. I contacted Ford to ask if they would be willing to cover this cost for me since I’m not able to plug in my vehicle. No luck.

My vehicle is a Titanium with all the features: heated steering wheel, heated seats, heated mirrors, cooled seats, etc. It has 55k miles on it. The buy back price is 10k less than what I paid for it.

Is the payout plus 15% enough to be even or get out of your loan?

Yes, the payout plus 15% is triple what I owe on it, so that is a positive. It’s just so frustrating to purchase such an expensive car with the intent to drive it until it dies, and now I’ll lose out on so much because it’s depreciated.

@Marley
But if you can get out of it, I don’t see why you don’t move on. They’re doing the buyback as a potential fire precaution, so I would just take the money and run. You’ve had it for almost 3 years, so just call it a loss and take your payout.

If it is recalled, then aren’t they supposed to replace it?

They claim they do not have the parts (new battery). Currently, the options are to put a fuse block in it to render the battery inoperable or sell it to them.

@Marley
That sounds like some dealership lies in order to get you to sell it to them tbh.

It’s not coming from a dealership. It’s coming from Ford directly. I’ve actually read where some people who chose to sell it back have a hard time because their local dealerships do not want to deal with it, and they are not required to. So some people are having to drive to dealerships far from their home just to drop off the car for buy back.

@Marley
And this is an actual recall, not some warranty thing? That sounds suspicious if so.

Yep. Recall 23S33. Recall Info.

@Marley
Oh wow, it’s even in the recall that they don’t have parts to fix it. I can’t believe that’s legal.

They “fixed” the problem by blocking wall charging. They will replace the batteries with new ones (supposedly next year). Honestly, I paid $20k in April for a 19 Fusion Energi knowing I’d be getting a new traction battery in a year or two. I put a lot of miles on it (more than 50k since April) and getting a new traction battery will likely extend the life of the car.

Let them buy it back, take the money, and buy a fully loaded 17-18 Energi. You will have essentially the same car without the battery issue and some money left over in your pocket.
