My daughter recently bought a 2017 Ford Fusion with 50k miles on it, and unfortunately, it’s already showing signs of coolant intrusion. We’re seeing symptoms like coolant loss, rough starts, and some white smoke from the exhaust.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I’ve been reading about problems with the 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost engines, but I’m hoping to get advice on the best course of action. Should we be looking at a head gasket, a cracked block, or something else entirely?
Any suggestions or experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated before we head to a mechanic. Thanks…
Fire. Burn it all. It’s essentially a head gasket failure caused by the coolant channel in between the cylinders. In theory, replacing the head gasket should work for a while.
I just had this exact same problem with my 2017. Transmission had to be replaced at 72,000, which was the day I drove it off the lot, and now the same issue you’re having and my engine is trash at 84,000. Currently waiting to hear back from Ford on a buyback.
Could check with her insurance as this is a costly fix to replace; might see if it meets the value for being considered total, but you would definitely need to get with a good mechanic first to write up how much it would cost in total to fix. A friend of mine did this on his 2016 and he ended up paying his 500 deductible and insurance ended up covering the cost of the replacement and labor from his mechanic.

Long-term solution is a new engine with the redesigned block.
When was this fixed?
'19 and '20.
I have a '19 that had a new engine installed right before my warranty expired. And it’s doing it again not even a year into my new engine. My first and last Ford.

Don’t buy 1.5. There is no rational reason why you would.
Well, it was my daughter and unfortunately, the dealership didn’t warn her. So I was just trying to find any suggestions for a temp fix until she can dump it off on another dealer.
@Sorrell
How long ago did she buy it? Most used cars come with a 36-month or 3-year warranty. I would blame this on them since it’s been well known to dealers for almost 6+ years.
