2013 Transmission Surges and Lags

Has anyone had this? Will a trans fluid change help or is it a bad transmission? $500 vs $3500

For a Fusion or Focus? That’s a picture of a Focus.

Yeah it is.

This isn’t a Fusion, it’s a Focus. That generation of Focus is notorious for transmission issues if it’s an automatic.

Late and rough shifts are so common on these that it’s considered normal. All you can do is drain and fill fluid. Do not flush. Beyond that is above our pay grade and ability to diagnose. I find using the paddle shifters nearly eliminates the problems entirely, strangely.

@Zion
Ok. So it’s common. That at least is some solace. There’s a transmission shop that said it’s $325 but if the fluid looks bad after one drain they put another through for $80…

Drain and fill every 30K miles. Never flush. Being a 2013 I’m betting it’s never been done.

That looks like a Focus.

r/lostredditors moment?

My 2016 does this and it’s so annoying.

I YouTubed videos on how to drain and refill trans fluid and it’s not hard at all. Harbor Freight has a cheap hand pump that I used.

You can try to flush the fluid, it may or may not help. These cars are known for having transmission issues. It was a design flaw by Ford by not having a serviceable transmission filter.

NEVER FLUSH!! The filters are non-replaceable and flushing just clogs them right up and kills the transmission.

@Teal
Flush meaning drain old fluid and add new fluid.

The correct term is drain and fill. If you say flush, people may mistake it for actual machine flushing… which is the worst thing.

Tomato, tomato.

Except that literally doesn’t work in this instance as a flush and drain & fill are two completely separate things.
