1.5 engine question

New to the group, I have this 2017 Ford Fusion SE with a 1.5. I’ve gone through enough subreddits to realize I made a mistake on getting a 1.5 since it’s a ticking time bomb ready to detonate on me. I can comfortably say that I like my car, from interior to exterior, very comfortably. But I have questions within the engine. I’m specifically saving up about $10,000 just ready to repair it once it comes to it. Why not buy a new car? Because I don’t think I’ll find one for $10,000 that I’ll enjoy the same as this one (don’t plan on financing any vehicle) if I was to “upgrade” to the 2019 engine without the block/head problem. What’s another downside that I’ll have to worry about this car? Or anything bad about those 2019 (updated) and up 1.5 engines?

Respectfully… Don’t sink that much money into this, that would be financially stupid on a beyond depreciating asset. Save your money; if/when it comes to that kind of major repair, there WILL be another Fusion in your price range and with a better motor, trust.

@Briar
Why would he spend 10k on another Ford Fusion that’s going to give him the same exact problem? It’s a better idea to spend 10k on his current one to repair the engine. That will be a stupid decision to go out to buy another car when you could just replace the engine with the brand new one and have that car way longer.

@Crosby
If he bought a hybrid Fusion he’d get a better motor.

And a shitty battery and ECVT lol.

Also, do I just have a heavy foot or is it normal to only get 21 mpg?

Unfortunately yeah. Have had mine for 8 months now and no S mode will definitely get me 21-23 mpg. Trash tbh. Highway shines at 30-36 mpg. Recently did a trip from Sarasota to Ft. Lauderdale and made it to and from with 96 miles left. Had 465 miles on the dash as opposed to 326 city driving.

If all city driving, very possible.

My 14 with 150k and the 1.5 gets 26 mpg and I drive it like I stole it, always in sport mode and modified with things like a throttle booster. When it was my wife’s daily she got 34-36 mpg. If mine pops I plan on swapping a 2020 engine but I’m a mechanic so it will only cost me the $2-3k low mile junkyard engines get.

@Will
I get 23 in a 14 EcoBoost. Would probably be better but I’m impatient lol. Good mix between cities and highways, being on the outskirts of Houston. Although we go 80+ on our highways.

Edit: about 130k miles.

I get 29 mpg on my 2016 1.5L.

I get 31 combined on mine.

Wow. I want to know this answer. I get 40-50 mpg but that’s a UK 2 litre diesel. 21 seems low for a petrol.

Should’ve got a hybrid.

1000% the hybrid is a good choice. I have one and I love it.

Same here, love mine, avg 42 mpg => $45 a month in gas in California!

I just sold this same car…1.5 with 195K and still running strong. Do the oil changes at every 5K and you will probably be fine.

Not to mention SYNTHETIC OIL.

Save your money and drive it until the engine fails. There’s lots that don’t fail so it’s not even guaranteed.
